“Accusations of Attempted Gerrymandering”
Front Page, RTD
In the third largest locality in the state of Virginia, the local elected officials came up with a plan to gerrymander their districts so they wouldn’t have any competition in coming elections. Khan and other citizens sent a report to the state showing the data. The Attorney General then denied certification of the maps on the basis of racial gerrymandering, in line with Khan’s argument.
“The Mega Site”

The Mega Site was a shady 200 million dollar deal that would’ve put taxpayers in a hole. High caliber consultants were brought in to make sure the deal went through. After much effort, the deal was stopped, winning the case for the citizens.

In this case, Khan was advocating against an ordinance that would’ve made it easier for entities to take advantage of lower income communities while giving protections to higher income communities. The following is directly quoted from the article:

Noting that applicants still will have to obtain a conditional-use permit to install a freestanding EMC sign in certain parts of the county – including the villages of Chester, Midlothian and Bon Air, and sections of Belmont and Turner roads – Khan questioned how and why those areas were selected for preferential treatment.
“In those zones, you’ve decided that we want to make sure citizens have input and it has to go through the proper approval process [by the Board of Supervisors]. However, most of the county will not have a way to hold elected officials accountable for their vote,” he said.
“One or two years down the line, people may come and want to put in a lot of these electronic signs and government officials will be able to say there’s nothing we can do because this is the law of the land now. I think there’s an issue with that.”
